IT IS COMMON to think of spiritual abuse in churches as referring to the excesses of a tyrannical minister or a manipulative group of elders terrorizing the unfortunate congregation. That kind of abuse has been written about many times in books and essays. Commonly known as “heavy shepherding”, this is when a church slips over the line of exercising legitimate biblical authority into having the basic trappings of a nasty little cult; and it happens a great deal when immature or spiritually-untransformed men, or outright sociopaths wangle their way into office. This is what most people would readily identify as “spiritual abuse”.

However, because that kind of abuse has been written about so extensively, the present book covers a couple of more suppressed but no less vicious or prolific aspects of spiritual abuse in churches. Namely, 1) The abuse of a pastor by the elders and/or members of the congregation and, 2) The abuse of members of a congregation through the prevailing religious practices of a church or organization which they have chosen for themselves.

This 132-page, 44,000-word book, based on a four-part series of articles on spiritual abuse which were written between 1998 and 2002, shows the shocking treatment of many Pastors, and includes the harrowing testimony of a woman whose life was almost destroyed through Charismatic practices and so-called “Deliverance Ministry”. These original articles have now been elaborated on through additional helpful commentary showing that such practices have proliferated at an alarming rate to the present date.

There is much in the way of teaching in this book, including the mortification of sinful behaviours, the place of illness in the life of the Christian, the lie which is at the heart of so-called “deliverance ministry”, the scourge of easy-believism and much more.
