[Here is an extract from the upcoming Second Edition of my 1994 book, “The Serpent & the Cross: Religious Corruption in an Evil Age”. It is clarifying an important difference between the two main types of ‘New Ager’ — one of them definitely being more proactive in creating the kind of world conditions contributing to the future debacle and denouement of this age and ‘civilisation’. This piece is a mere 1500 words and has an 8-minute read-time].
When I speak of the “New Age Movement” throughout this book — the first edition of which was being written between thirty and forty years ago — I am not primarily referring to the trendy modern aberrations which have hijacked that label in more recent times. In fact, the use of the term “New Age” these days has become something of a misnomer. All the pseudo-therapies, gong sound-baths, massages, swooshy music, pan-pipes, meditations, ‘manifesting’ material things, crystal healings, Ayahuasca sessions, divination of various kinds (astrology, angel cards, and tarot cards), ‘goddess coaching’, chakra alignment, affirmations, breathwork, aura adjustment, alleged ‘Akashic Record’ readings, creative visualisation, getting ‘blissed-out’ on anything which will do the job, and all the other associated nonsense are syncretic modern manifestations of elements loosely borrowed from ancient eastern religions, witchcraft, theosophical notions, transpersonal psychology, and the ‘New Thought’ movement.
These practices function as a kind of narcissistic featherbed for damaged people who are trying to bypass having to deal with their sin-infested personality disorders. Such techniques and practices are just ‘groovy’ ways for fashionable hipsters, Valley Girls, and other trendies to get ‘strokes’ to massage their egos. This is the ‘Self-Indulgent’ kind of ‘New Age’, as opposed to the real ‘New Age Movement’ which I would refer to as emphasising ‘Maitreyan Transformation’ philosophy. (The significance of the word, “Maitreya”, will be opened up in a later chapter of this book). Both those types of New Ageism are deluded. Neither of them is better nor worse than the other. But one of them tends to be obsessed with self-indulgent syncretic practices, while the other imagines that they are contributing towards bringing in the next stage in human evolution through occult processes.
The ‘Self-Indulgent’ type of New Ageism practises the above ‘witchy-woo’ activities as a way of pampering one’s ego and gaining the security of being part of a fashionable community as one’s peer group. These trendy practices which had their modern resurgence in the last few decades have come to have the trappings of what people call ‘New Age’ but they are not technically ‘New Age’, even though that phrase is used for them. Part of the New Spirituality, yes. But not technically ‘New Age’. They have also become big money-spinners as those who lead the therapies charge mucho moolah for them and everyone in that trendy New Spirituality scene wants to be a teacher/guru/coach/leader so they can swan off to Bali or Tulum a couple of times per year on the proceeds! But all that stuff isn’t the real ‘New Age’ teaching. As I said above, those trendy self-indulgent practices are just mimicking syncretic elements of ancient eastern religions, witchcraft, theosophical notions, and the New Thought Movement. So, what is the real New Age teaching?
The real New Age scene — the ‘Maitreyan Transformation’ type of New Ageism — is a spiritual crusade which concerns itself with how to bring in the New (Aquarian) Age, the ‘Golden Age’ on earth, the ‘Great Shift’, what they regard as the next stage of human evolution through deep occult techniques such as deliberately ‘channelling’ discarnate entities who are supposedly from other galaxies or dimensions through powerful collective invocations, cultivating ‘spirit-guides’, and sophisticated methods of networking in support of generating a ‘leap in human consciousness’.
All this activity was instigated particularly, as I will later show, by the writings of the likes of Helena Blavatsky (1831-1891), then developed by her successor, Annie Besant (1847-1933), then expounded on in a major way by Alice Bailey (1880-1949) who is the ‘mother’ of genuine New Ageism — Teilhard de Chardin being the ‘father’ of it with his ‘Point Omega’ idea. However, even that notion has been borrowed from all the world religions which teach that there will be a coming World Teacher/Leader who will bring the planet into that new age of world peace and ‘enlightenment’. This is all motivated by their expectation of a ‘World Teacher’ heading up a global government. This character has all the resemblance of what avid students of the Bible would regard as the Antichrist, which I will be developing in a later chapter. So there is a general expectancy in world religions and occult circles that there is a coming ‘Golden Age’ on earth which will be heralded by a ‘World Teacher’ who will pull it all together. This is the real New Age teaching.
This is very different from the many trendy so-called ‘New Agers’ of today who are fashionably mimicking elements of witchcraft and eastern religion with all their self-indulgent ‘me-centred’ practices. It is all part of the ‘New Spirituality’, but they are not involved in occultly preparing for a global ‘New Age’ at all. They are just chasing an illusory total physical health and imagined personal divinity. For them, getting blissed out in a fog of mesmeric euphoria is the pinnacle of spiritual activity. But it is not really ‘New Age’. The real New Age involves those who are much deeper in the darkness actively working towards preparing for the ‘World Teacher’ and the ‘Golden Age’ on earth by communing with discarnate entities through determined networking and channelling those entities individually and in groups in order to bring on the ‘New World Order’ which will culminate in the revealing of the Antichrist (though they would not see him as that).
Thus, while the modern trendy ‘Self-Indulgent’ type of New Agers are busy pandering solely to themselves with ego-boosting practices, the ‘Maitreyan Transformation’ folks — the real ‘New Age Movement’ — are engaging in occult magical exercises designed to further the global goals of the satanic world-system and bring about an antichristian pogrom designed to destroy the Church and usurp the Messiahship of Jesus Christ with their false ‘messiah’, who we would recognise as the Antichrist.
So, when I speak of the “New Age Movement” in this book, I am not primarily referring to the trendy ‘Self-Indulgent’ clique which has usurped the title of ‘New Age’, but to the ‘Maitreyan Transformation’ element. The ‘Self-Indulgent’ clique of New Agers has its place as a low-level manifestation of satanic activity to carry away susceptible souls into the ‘cloud-cuckoo-land’ of witchy-woo practices (plus it can act as a gateway into the real ‘Maitreyan Transformation’ type of ‘New Age’), but it is not a major player in the humanistic shaping of the destiny and debacle of this fallen world’s future.
Generally, it is the ‘Self-Indulgent’ type of New Ager who will claim to have come to Christ. In fact, many of them never stop going on about their ‘New Age to Jesus’ journey, in spite of the fact that it isn’t even the real old-style New Ageism but just a trendy version of it! Many of them seem to want to be treated as ‘celebrity conversions’; and there is no end of churches who will foolishly oblige, fanning the flames of their egos, despite the fact that every soul who comes to Christ, by whatever route, however seemingly ‘mundane’, is an utter miracle.
Significantly, if a real New Age person of the ‘Maitreyan Transformation’ type happens to come to Christ (a rare occurrence, but it does happen), he or she will quietly mature in the faith without any need to keep drawing attention to themselves or to be treated like ‘celebrity-conversions’ (which, unfortunately, is often encouraged in many misguided churches), for they are just utterly grateful to have been rescued from the power of darkness. I feel that this difference in behaviour between the two types of ‘New Age’ person is of crucial significance.
The New Age ‘Maitreyan Transformation’ type of vision for the future of human civilisation is entirely in harmony with the biblical data concerning the approaching darkness of the end of this evil age, when humanity will finally begin to believe that it has subdued the world, brought down the Church, apostatised away from the need for belief in the transcendent God of the Bible, and found itself an ‘enlightened’ ‘World Teacher’ to lead it into a ‘Golden Age’ on earth as the next stage of evolution. Never before in history have all the conditions been so favourable to the fulfilment of this fundamental long-term aim of Satan and his demonic realm.
As we work our way through this book, we will see the numerous twists and turns of historical development which have made possible the prevailing conditions of the present time. We will come to see that the influence of the New Gnosticism is sweeping through the formative institutions of Western culture — especially the intelligentsia, the ‘caring’ professions (social work, nursing, etc.), medicine, psychology, psychotherapy, multi-national industry, the major religious faiths, global agencies, and world government organisations. There is no area of life which is now devoid of this neo-Gnostic mindset, to a greater or lesser degree.
In the next section of this chapter, we will discover that there is nothing ‘new’ about the ‘New Age’…
