In this book Alan Morrison reveals very clearly what Satan’s strategy throughout the ages of human existence has been, and it is a very simple strategy. Alan shows that because it worked so well with our first parents in Eden, he has just been continuing working with the same offers he presented to Adam and Eve: 1. Immortality, 2. The gaining of secret wisdom, and 3. Being gods equal to God. The outworking of this strategy throughout the ages becomes extremely apparent throughout this book — and not just the outworking in the ‘world’, but also in the ‘church’. It becomes very plain through reading this book that if one is not a lover of the truth, one will be taken in by all these lies which the enemy, Satan, gladly offers to all.

Alan is not just a very clear and insightful teacher who has done a massive amount of research, but he is also a pastor at heart, and all who love the truth will find much comfort and guidance in his writings. Personally I found this book not just very insightful and informative, but also very encouraging to love the truth all the more, and to know that there is a huge chasm between Satan’s lies and the truth that is in Christ.

I first met Alan in the mid-1980s, not long before he started writing the first edition of this book (which I also proofread). Coming from a Christian home, I had a unique perspective as my father was a Wesleyan Methodist, a Lutheran scholar, and a professor of systematic theology. But at 17, I ran headlong into the New Age and Gnosticism, full of the arrogance that comes so easily in youth. I thought I knew so much. But looking back, I knew very little other than that I was searching for something intangible. Eventually, once converted, I got into the Charismatic movement, and eventually out of all that and into Covenant Theology and the doctrines of grace. Reading this second edition, I recognize so much of my own journey in its pages.

The truths in “The Serpent and the Cross” are often hard, but necessary. This book is a deep dive into the long war between good and evil, played out not just in the world but even in the church. From Genesis 3:15, this battle has raged, and the threads Alan traces here are as real and relevant today as ever. To anyone asking how we ended up where we are, this book offers a roadmap of answers. It shows where things went wrong, where we are now, and calls us to repentance and vigilance, to stand firm in the fight against the powers we’ve always been up against, but where the outcome is absolutely certain.

Simply stated, this authoritative, yet loving book, reveals that there are only two sources of spiritual direction: Gnostics seek to be “God” through hidden or secret knowledge, mimicking the desire of Adam and Eve for knowledge, godhood, and living forever. Christ-seekers fall at the foot of the Cross in repentance and faith, seeking to know God in the present, through His Word, and to live with Him forever. Reading this bookhas brought new light to my current beliefs, emboldening truth and throwing deep question marks at some things I thought were true. I have now become aware of undue ‘tiny concepts’ that have crept into my Christian walk through psychology and so-called “Christian” self-help books. Now I see how false they were. I must be on guard against ideas I have picked up from past sermons I have heard that may not have contained as much truth as I once thought. This book has alerted me to many beguiling dangers. Lord, purify my head and my heart.

In 1994, the first edition of this volume was reviewed favourably by several stalwarts of the faith. In the Church, society, and worldwide culture, there had been changes before the first edition was published and arguably those changes have often accelerated in the time since then. Hence the need for a revised and updated edition.

One of the great strengths of this volume is the way in which the roots (often occult or satanic) of different streams are identified. So science has become increasingly and often militantly atheistic in its underlying philosophy. This is also reflected in art and virtually every other subject of study.

The author’s argument taken as a whole from the falsifying of origins to the planned future is compelling and holds together consistently. It is particularly helpful to see ‘the great reset’ biblically evaluated and critiqued as it is to see the way in which modern science can effectively take on board witchcraft. Science fiction often becomes magical implicitly, but here, as Alan shows, science itself has been influenced.

The author’s intention throughout is best summed up in his own words: “The Christian who is rooted in Scripture has no problem accepting [God’s sovereignty as the great Orderer and Controller of evil], coming to understand, through the revelation of the Spirit, why evil exists, why God permits it to do so, and how it will finally be done away with by Him”. This volume is a valuable update and expansion to the original to reinforce believers in facing the inevitable challenges to their faith. You may not agree with everything you read but you’d better have thought things through biblically in order to disagree with most of the author’s reasoning.
