THIS PAPER was originally published as a shorter essay in the Diakrisis Journal in 1993. It was updated somewhat in 2003 and has remained neglected since then. Now, 22 years later, I have updated it with 40% more material during the last few days, working day and night at white-hot temperature. It now contains 67 pages in a large-format paperback size with almost 25,000 words and is freely available at the foot of this page in a high quality PDF file in which all the hyperlinks are interactive and you can bring the bookmarks up in a column on the left of your screen which shows all the headings and subheadings.
John Lange rightly calls this subject “a highly important part of the prophetic word”. You see, my friends, the next item on the prophetic agenda is not the phoney “rapture” that so many are woefully expecting. Neither will it be a “global revival” or “golden age”. The next item is the climaxing of the apostasy and the revealing of the “man of lawlesness”, the Antichrist, who is the culmination of that apostasy (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3).
Before you start groaning about “negativity”, this is not really a depressing subject because we know that ALL THINGS (even seemingly bad things) work together “for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). I have tried to cover every area possible on this subject of “antichrist” and THE “Antichrist” and leave no stone unturned. It is not merely about something which is yet to come in the future. The apostasy which builds up to it is all around us even now. This is the “mystery of lawlessness” in the “spirit of the Antichrist” which have been gradually building up since Paul’s time and which will culminate with the revealing of the Antichrist himself, in a welter of counterfeit which is beyond the imaginings of the unregenerate mind. The many aspects of that counterfeit are laid out in this paper.
Some will see this post and say, “This is not for me. I am a devotional Christian and do not involve myself with controversy”. Oh, but you ARE right in the midst of this controversy!! It will impact you in countless ways. The deception is going to be so strong that a lack of preparedness will leave one at a disadvantage. This world is exponentially descending into a morass of madness which no amount of pietism will obscure. As I have written in this paper:
“It is not only as if a kind of mental disorder is creeping through the world but an actual spiritual possession, as if an invisible hand of evil and deception has crippled their insight and is turning them into barbarians… They are being sucked into a vortex of deception which will be both an astonishment and an abomination. It is happening all around us exponentially even now”.

“In this paper, we examine the thorny topic of the identification of the Antichrist as he is portrayed in Scripture. There have been a great many offerings throughout the history of the Church as to who this might be, and even in our own day. In view of the fact that the revealing of the Antichrist will be the final chapter in the cosmic history of sin and lawlessness and considering that it is the curtain-raiser to the second coming of Christ, it is surely a subject which warrants our close attention. So all the hallmarks of the Antichrist are therefore provided. Additionally, the history of teaching about the Antichrist is opened up in this paper, from the early church fathers through the medieval period, the Reformation, the Puritans down to the present day. Moreover, the meaning of the word “antichrist” is dissected from Scripture and applied in all the ways that are legitimately viable. No stone is left unturned in this wide-ranging paper. It has been written to build up the people of God with logical, honest, orthodox exposition, to the glory of God”.
