In what ways is Christian spirituality different from New Age or Eastern mystical ‘spirituality’? What does true spirituality entail? How does one become spiritual? Is being spiritual just about feeling good, getting “zapped” or blissed-out? If not, then what on earth is true spirituality? Where does Divine discipline and chastisement fit into the spirituality of the disciple of Christ? These and many more questions are answered in this paper: “God’s Sacred Training Programme – The Realities and Crises of the Spiritual Life in Christ”

What an excellent and powerful read, Alan! I am slowly catching up on all your other work, alongside reading your book, the Serpent & the Cross, but the specific word “spiritual” prompted me to read this paper today, and I’m very glad I did. It was a much-needed spiritual supplement. I know that I have been struggling myself and keep needing a reality check about the spiritual life in Christ—understanding true spirituality and not seeking validation from others but needing to learn the necessary lessons in this life for personal and spiritual growth, whether by judging ourselves properly or through the Lord’s necessary chastisement. I am, and will continue to be, a “fool for Christ”. Thank you again for sharing such profound wisdom.
