From the Preface to the Second Edition of
“The Essential Apocalypse: Making Sense of the Book of Revelation”

After many requests from readers during the last two years to issue this book in a physical format — an artefact one can actually hold in one’s hands — this has finally happened. I initially put the text out in eBook format as an experiment to see if there would be any interest and, if there were, then I would see about creating the book in a physical format rather than merely remaining in eBook form for distribution on the internet. After seeing the result of that experiment, this book is finally happening.

I have gone through the manuscript a number of times more with a fine toothcomb in order to spot inadequacies, inconsistencies, typos, and to make improvements where necessary. More than 28,000 words, an additional 13% of material, have been added to the first edition and many details have been strengthened. In fulfilment of the desire to perfect and enhance, to hone and refine, and to be as pleasing to my Master as possible, no stone has been left unturned.

Initially, it will be a smallish print-run to gauge interest. Afterwards, we will see. The free eBook version — though now in this second edition, to match the physical book — will continue to remain in the Books section on my website for those who cannot afford to pay or who prefer the convenience of a digital version, or who want both.

I am deeply grateful to those who have sponsored the printing and publication of this book. I should say that none of the monetary proceeds from sales will go to me, the author, but instead will go towards repaying those who have invested funds in the printing project. The price is being kept to the lowest possible level while still being able to fulfil that repayment to sponsors. Two years after the first edition was issued, I look out across a world that is now even more decaying into the degenerate, God-dismissing, Divine-law-rejecting dystopia envisaged by Jesus and His apostles and especially by John in his revealing apocalypse. I pray that the words in this book will help the reader understand why this should be and what should be his or her best response to it.

A thoroughly worthwhile read. The author’s respect for Scripture and concern to do justice to rendering the sense of Scripture is always to the fore. He guards against any forcing of the message of the book which can often happen in such works by being over literal or through imposing a pre-conceived agenda and moulding the sense of the text to fit.

Many authors seek to find a sevenfold division, whereas this writer chooses to allow the book to naturally divide itself rather than insisting it must have seven major sections. Again, the author’s concern is to allow the book to govern the exposition and application in order to encourage the lost to seek the only Saviour, and those already within Christ’s fold to be reassured that He is still in control.

There may be points of detail where the reader disagrees with the author. In fact, in all probability the author’s own views will have evolved so that even he might not have held the same detailed view say twenty years ago. However, even when there are differences, Scripture is handled with tremendous respect — for example, the identity of the Angel of the churches in the seven letters, the rider of the white horse amongst the four horsemen. It can’t be a bad thing to subject your biblical understanding to a process of refinement, and that is what this volume both encourages and facilitates.
