“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory that is far beyond comparison. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

IN YOUR WALK through the wilderness of this world — with its bathetic banality, psychological and emotional madness, incessant narcissism, outright injustice, malicious mendacity, cringing conformity, along with its hideous cruelty, savagery, barbarity, violence and ruthless tyranny — there comes a point when you can no longer take pleasure in very much. Only the most simple things will bring you any pleasure at all. Even what people call “entertainment” becomes either just a bunch of noise, quite ridiculous, or even offensive in your eyes. You can no longer watch a movie for example, because it’s no more interesting to watch people with no spiritual foundation floating about trying to find solutions to problems and doing the kind of things that you would never do. Moreover, by watching them you are very often inviting cruel, vengeful, fornicatory people into your living-room who you would never normally have there. I don’t mind a decent mystery to be solved, or watching evil people get their comeuppance; but I usually get bored halfway through and switch off.

What you discover is that you’re being weaned off everything in the world. Everything. Very little really gives you any pleasure anymore. Even what you had hoped would bring you sweetness turns out to be sour or merely another illusion, an exercise in deluding yourself. People will let you down left, right and centre — even betray you, even those who you had thought were or would be the mainstays of your life. There are precious exceptions to this: The touch or skin of a cherished soul. A shaft of sunlight falling on your cheek. Getting soaked on a walk in the rain. The delights of nature. So you install yourself in the countryside. Though even that becomes somewhat tarnished when you witness the desperate predation and seemingly senseless cruelty which is inherent in creaturedom. Then there is birdsong. How good that is for the soul! But that is just a form of music, which is also a delight. (There is poetry too, but that is just music in wordform). Music. Yes, wonderful music. But then music is something etheric, without physical form, that travels through the air and that cannot be seen with the eyes. It just magically comes to your ears and that is such a remarkable thing as it seems to belong to the world of the unseen rather than the prison of materiality. If there was no such thing as birdsong and music why even bother staying on this planet, in this cosmos? Well, there is a reason… For this cosmos has been made for you ultimately to become disillusioned with it and to become so enraptured with what cannot be seen so that what can be seen becomes comparatively trivial and even tortuously nonsensical.

This has nothing to do with thinking that you’re ‘better’ than anybody else. Perish the thought! (Though some, maybe many, will unfairly accuse you of that). But ‘better’ doesn’t really come into it. You just reach a space where the process in which you are involved means that you’ve become so weirdly different to most other people that you have become… well… like another species. That’s the only way that I can put it. Fortunately you will find souls from time to time who are on your wavelength and that’s a good thing. This doesn’t mean that one is unfriendly to people who are not on your wavelength. Not at all. For part of this process means that you discover the true meaning of true love, and you realise that you love everybody really and you are very happy to bump into folks in the Post Office and speak about the weather, or the price of eggs, or how the world isn’t what it used to be, or to listen to their problems and you just love to try to be helpful, and especially to be helpful to their souls.

Also, this does not mean that we do not care about the things that take place in this world. If anything, we care about them even more, in a heightened sense. We are even more concerned about seeing justice done (and doing everything we can to promote it). We are even more motivated to expose the works of darkness as investigative “reporters“. We are even more motivated to stand up for truth and unmask lies. We are even more impelled to be compassionate and to promote what is right and to take a stand against what is wrong.

Really, one realises that the whole world is a theatre — a staged waking dream — and that one is feeling one’s way towards being able to play one’s part with the utmost integrity and authenticity and anything which does not accord with that integrity and authenticity will either be deliberately eschewed or it will just naturally fall away. Then you become increasingly disillusioned with ‘that which can be seen’ in this world — this staged reality which is really unreality — and there will be the inevitable time when you discover that you are falling in love with what really lies behind all this material concoction — the unseen reality which includes the Maker of it all, for nothing has come into this existence in a vacuum. This theatre is a morality tale which demands of us a moral response. That response will determine our eventual eternal circumstances.
