UNDERNEATH THE LYRICS BELOW, you will find a video-demo of a song which will now be on my upcoming 14-song music album, “The Battle for Everyone’s Heart”. The song is entitled “I Take It All Back”. It has penitential lyrics with remorse for always thinking the worst is going to happen and not trusting in God’s providence and resting in the unknown. Misplaced pessimism. This is just a demo-version with me on voice and acoustic guitar. The studio recording for the album will have other instruments and light percussion.
Music can have a profound effect on the soul, as David knew with his harp (1 Samuel 16:14–23), and as the Sacred Texts show elsewhere (Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16. This whole album is designed to be an encouragement which will appeal to those who see clearly the direction in which this world is heading, and especially to those who have discerned the spiritual battle behind it. For those who have not yet cottoned-on to this world-direction, it is my hope that this album will shine some much-needed light on the only spiritual pathway which will make it all make sense. I have poured my whole heart into this music. So for all these reasons, and because I want it to go as far and wide as possible, I am presenting this album as a love-gift to be downloaded from a dedicated website at no cost. The whole recording process is being crowdfunded and I am still gathering pledges of suppport, so if you want to make a contribution just let me know first and I will share more details.
The style of this particular song (and some others on the album) is what I call “Thinking Person’s Pop”, in which the melody is in the singer-songwriter genre (usually 1960s/70s tenor) with lyrics designed to challenge conventional thinking or to take the listener’s mindset into new territory. Feel free to sing along and harmonise! 🙂 Here are the lyrics:
I’ve said and thought so many things
as if they were cast iron
about the way that life’s flow brings
us through the fading line.
But then my subjectivity
can misinterpret signs
so when I’m looking out to sea
all I discern is brine.
[Refrain]
I take it all back —
my foolish tongue.
In my defence I was immature and young.
So from now on,
stopped in my tracks,
I will submit to the unknown.
I take it all back…
I take it all back…
I take it all back.
That salty taste poised on my tongue
is just a smart disguise
to cover up what was unsung
when my heart was unwise.
Imagine my surprise when sweetness
seeped onto my lips!
From there it did just effervesce
and light this manuscript.
[Refrain]
I take it all back —
my foolish tongue.
In my defence I was immature and young.
So from now on,
stopped in my tracks,
I will submit to the unknown.
I take it all back…
I take it all back…
I take it all back.
No more will I obey my head
when heartness is obscured.
No longer will I now be led
or by the gloom be lured.
I’m open, therefore, to receive
whate’er God sends my way.
If nothing, then I’ll still believe
that love wins, come what may.
[Refrain]
I take it all back —
my foolish tongue.
In my defence I was immature and young.
So from now on,
stopped in my tracks,
I will submit to the unknown.
I take it all back…
I take it all back…
I take it all back.
There’s nothing left for me to do
except submit to flow;
even when our God has turned the screw
and makes it hard to know.
There’s more on earth that meets the eye;
there’s gold that lies beyond.
The lessons that are thrown our way
with growth do correspond.
[Refrain]
I take it all back —
my foolish tongue.
In my defence I was immature and young.
So from now on,
stopped in my tracks,
I will submit to the unknown.
I take it all back…
I take it all back…
I take it all back.
