INTRODUCTION: The Necessity of Spiritual Salvation
Asking questions is one of the ways that we can grow spiritually. But we have to ensure that we ask the right questions. “How can I lose five kilos” may be a good question to ask for your body’s sake; but it will not help your soul. From a spiritual point of view, the greatest question anyone can ask is: “What must I do to be saved?” Paul and Silas must have been overjoyed when they were asked that question by the surprised jailer in Philippi (Acts 16:29-31). The Apostle Peter must also have been overjoyed when he was asked a similar question by a crowd in Jerusalem after he preached a powerful sermon (Acts 2:37-41). The answer was always along the same lines: “Repent and believe with all your heart in the Lord Jesus Christ, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit”. This is an infallible process.
Now, you may say, “Saved from what? I don’t need saving from anything!”, which is what a great many people do say. But the truth is that we do need saving; and it is the realization of this which opens the door for it.
To be “saved” means to be delivered or redeemed from the effects and consequences of having a sinful nature — a nature which is continually inclined towards moral failure. Those who claim not to have been born with a corrupted nature are deluding themselves. [For full details about this, please see my article, “You Were Once Darkness: The True Nature of the Human Condition Without Christ”. Just click on that title to go there].
To be “saved” means having one’s sins dealt with in Christ and thereby forgiven, thus starting with a clean slate, receiving a new nature, and therefore no longer being subject to spiritual death. For without repentance one will die in one’s sins and find oneself after physical death in the symbolically-named “lake of fire” — which means final separation from God and being in a state of considerable distress. I am not making this up. I know it gets brushed over in many churches today or where a sentimental ‘Jesus’ is spoken of; but this is Jesus’ own teaching, and it was taught about Jesus too: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him” (John 3:36; see also Matthew 3:12; 13:40,42,50; 18:8-9; 25:41; Mark 9:43-48). If the wrath of God “remains” on you when you die in your sins, if you have not made your peace with God, then it logically follows that it was already on you when you were alive and you were not living “in sync” with Him and His laws. It is from all this which we need saving.
To “repent” means to be so profoundly internally penitent for all the wrong you have ever done that you want your life to be completely turned around and from the bottom of your heart you pledge yourself to do that, with God’s help. The Greek word for repentance is metanoia, which literally means a totally changed mind and heart — a transformed soul. This can only happen supernaturally. You cannot achieve such transformation through therapy or meditation or psychedelic drugs, for these only give the illusion of change at a far more superficial level than supernaturally.
“Repent and believe with all your heart in the Lord Jesus Christ”. To “believe in the Lord Jesus Christ” means to accept as true what is said about Him in the Bible — especially receiving as true that He came to save people from their guilt before God for their sins, by taking the penalty for them on the cross and by being raised from the dead after He had died. If they repent and believe this, whole households and more can be saved. From one little question, great things can happen, and they do!
I have been asked that all-important question by confused people on a number of occasions. To be asked such a question is a great gift. But there is another question that I have been asked on even more occasions. It is this: “How do I know if I am saved?” If I had a dollar for every time that I have ever been asked that question, it would buy me a lot of hot dinners! Fortunately, there are many different signs that one is truly a genuine disciple of Christ which we can then use as ‘litmus tests’ to see if we really are saved. I have isolated fourteen of such signs here. Here they are:
THE CERTAIN SIGNS OF SPIRITUAL SALVATION
In other words, I am speaking of those elements in your life which verify your calling and election and demonstrate to you that you are a genuine disciple of Christ.
The first sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
1) An Avid Hatred of Moral Failure, Sin, or Violation of God’s Law
If you are truly saved, you will have an avid hatred in your heart of moral failure, commonly known as sin, or any violation of God’s law.
“I hate every false way” (Psalm 119:104). Job is described as “fearing God and shunning evil” (Job 1:1). “I hate the mob of evildoers, and refuse to sit with the wicked” (Psalm 26:5). “I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked” (Psalm 84:10). “The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil” (Proverbs 8:13). When one is saved, it means that for the first time one has the ability to deal with one’s sin, with the remnants of the fallen nature which can dog us even after becoming “a new creation”. As the apostle Paul put it:
“In my inner being I delight in God’s law. But I see another law at work in my body, warring against the law of my mind and holding me captive to the law of sin that dwells within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?”.
Romans 7:22-24
It is only in the genuine disciple of Christ that there is that battle between the flesh and the Spirit (please read Galatians 5:16-17). In the unbeliever, there is no such battle because he or she does not have the Holy Spirit. The presence of the Spirit in genuine disciples of Christ guarantees that you will make war against any moral failure which threatens your peace. The very existence of that war is a sign that you are saved. Your own moral failure will be even more detestable to you than everyone else’s in the world put together, and it will drive you to the foot of the cross of Christ. When your heart is wholly inclined towards a hatred of sin — above all, your own — you can be certain that you have been saved.
So, the first sign of spiritual salvation is an ardent hatred of moral failure, sin, or violation of God’s law.
The second sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
2) A Powerful Love of God and His Christ
If you are truly saved, you will have a strong, lively, and joyful love for the One in whom you have believed: The Lord Jesus Christ, who is God incarnate. “Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 Peter 1:8). In fact, if a person claims to be a follower of Christ and does not love the Lord, this is such a contradiction in terms that it is a sign of pseudo-Christianity which will also lead to a terrible curse of judgement from God. “If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be under a curse” (1 Corinthians 16:22). Do you find that spine-chilling? I certainly do.
So, the second sign of spiritual salvation is that you will have a strong, lively, and joyful love for the One in whom you have believed.
The third sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
3) A Deep Love for the Word of God
Another sign that you are a genuine believer is that you will have a deep love for the Word of God, God’s law, God’s truth. “Oh, how I love Your law! All day long it is my meditation…How sweet are Your words to my taste—sweeter than honey in my mouth!” (Psalm 119:97 & 103). “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).
The Word of God and salvation are intimately linked: “The Holy Scriptures… are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15). This will be your only objective source of truth for morality, spiritual knowledge, and day-to-day living. To hear it preached through or expounded in commentaries, to read it or have it read from, will be a joy to you. You will always want to understand more about it. You will realise that it is God’s love-letter to you. This is another sign that you are saved.
So, the third sign of spiritual salvation is that you will have a deep love for the Word of God.
The fourth sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
4) A Deep and Unshakable Love for One’s Fellow Disciples
If you are truly saved, you will have a deep and lasting love for all other genuine disciples of Christ. “We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in a state of death” (1 John 3:14). John clearly states that to have that love is a sign that you have passed from death to life, thus proving that you are saved. When John speaks here of passing from death to life, he is echoing what Jesus said in John 5:24: “Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life”. Conversely, if you do not have that love then it is a sign that you have not been saved, that you have not passed (crossed over) from death to life. It is clear therefore that those who are constantly criticising, speaking contemptuously of, and darkly gossiping or lying about God’s true children are impostors and not among the saved.
When you have been saved, you will find that you now have a built-in instinct to detect real believers; and you will love them above all others too. “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to the family of faith” (Galatians 6:10). By this you will know you have been saved. For the only reason at all that we have this love in the first place is “because He loved us” (1 John 4:19). If He loves you, then you know for certain that you have been saved.
So, the fourth sign of spiritual salvation is that you will have a deep and lasting love for all other genuine disciples of Christ.
The fifth sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
5) An Intimate Understanding that You Have Been Adopted into God’s Family
When you are truly saved, you will have an intimate understanding that you have been adopted into God’s family by receiving the Holy Spirit as a “deposit” and a guarantee of the fullness of future glory in the age to come:
“The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ — if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him”.
Romans 8:15-17
“In Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory”.
Ephesians 1:13-14
When you have been saved, “the Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children”. Because of this “testifying” by the Holy Spirit with your spirit you will really know that God is your Father and that you are His child. You will be conscious of the fact that you have received that “downpayment” and “pledge of inheritance”. You will be inwardly and powerfully aware that you are no longer spiritual orphans (which is the desolate experience of those who are not saved). For Christ Himself has pledged “I will not leave you as orphans” (John 14:18).
So, the fifth sign of spiritual salvation is that you will have an intimate understanding that you have been adopted into God’s family by receiving the Holy Spirit as a “deposit” or downpayment on your redeemed life in the age to come.
The sixth sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is that…
6) You Will Experience the Power of Prayer and the Continual Desire to Pray
If you are truly saved, you will experience the power of prayer and the continual desire to pray. For “you have received the Spirit of divine adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Romans 8:15). That recognition of God as your Father and the desire to call out to Him in prayer — having been adopted as children of God — is a certain sign that you have been saved.
You will live in a state of gratitude for the fact that — with Christ as your intermediary to God — you have “access” to Him: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we stand” (Romans 5:1-2). Being justified by Christ (i.e. saved and rendered righteous by Him) very naturally leads on to having access to God in prayer, for prayer is the route of access. Thus the desire to pray at all is a certain sign of salvation. Plus also there is gratitude for the precious promises which we see in Psalm 145:18: “The LORD is near to all who call on Him, to all who call out to Him in truth”, and in Hebrews 4:16, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need”.
So, the sixth sign of spiritual salvation is that you will experience the power of prayer and the continual desire to pray.
The seventh sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is that…
7) You Will Be Able to Detect Real Spiritual Growth in your Life
If you are truly saved, you will be able to detect real spiritual growth in your knowledge, faith, and love. This is a most beautiful thing and a very sure sign of your spiritual salvation. You will know you are saved because you can experience the changes and growth in knowledge, grace and understanding in yourself, week by week, year by year. Paul could see it in those under his charge: “We are obligated to thank God for you all the time, brothers, as is fitting, because your faith is growing more and more, and your love for one another is increasing” (2 Thessalonians 1:3).
Regarding the disciples of Christ in his charge, Paul was confident enough to say “that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6). Your spiritual growth will therefore span the rest of your life on this earth. Right from the start this will be the case: “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (1 Peter 2:2-3). As Peter commended to the recipients of his letters: “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). For if we learn and grow, the reality is that
“we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head”.
Ephesians 4:14-15
This will be something that you can measure over a period of time. You will be able to say “Last year I was there. This year I am here”. You will notice the difference; and you will be encouraged by that.
So, the seventh sign of spiritual salvation is that you will be able to detect real growth in your knowledge, faith, and love.
The eighth sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is that…
8) You Will Have an Unshakeable Love of Truth and a Built-in Hatred of Falsehood
The Lord Jesus plainly said, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). Therefore, we can see from the logic of those words that being a genuine disciple of Christ who continues in His word in obedience and faith involves knowing truth at every level of human activity and beyond. Furthermore, receiving the Holy Spirit naturally gives you a love of truth: “The Paraclete is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you” (John 14:17). There is a delicious logical syllogism wrapped up in that verse.
First Premise: The world cannot receive the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of truth (because it does not see Him or know Him).
Second Premise: You do know the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of truth (because He is in you).
Conclusion: Therefore you have truth at the heart of your being.
Thus, your whole life will be dedicated to truth, by which you will know that you have been saved, for a person who has the Spirit of truth has the Holy Spirit and only a saved person can have the Holy Spirit. Are you grasping the preciousness of this?
The Fall of humanity, right at the beginning, involved exchanging the truth of God for the lie (see Romans 1:25) and a moment-by-moment suppression of truth from that time forth by every human being born into this world (see Romans 1:18). When you are saved, there is a total reversal of this process. Not being saved involves a natural rejection of spiritual truth and even a hatred of it. As we see in the prophecy about the coming of the Antichrist,
“The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the working of Satan, with every kind of power, sign, and false wonder, and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them”.
2 Thessalonians 2:9-10
A love of truth and salvation are intimately linked. Being saved by Christ involves a rejection of all falsehood and an absolute passion for truth, “Remove me from the path of deceit… I have chosen the way of truth… I hate every false way” (Psalm 119:29-30 & 104). This is why truly genuine disciples of Christ reject false teachings and have a love for purity of teaching.
So, the eighth sign of spiritual salvation is an unshakable love of truth and an acute hatred of falsehood.
The ninth sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is that…
9) Your Whole ‘Worldview’ will be Totally Transformed from How it Was Before You Were Saved
If you are truly saved, your whole ‘worldview’ will be very different to both how it was before you believed and to that held by the rest of the unbelieving world, and you will know it! “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come into being!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). If you are “in Christ”, you will have a brand-new spiritual and moral outlook on everything. You will be “transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).
As Jesus said to Nicodemus, “You must be born again” (John 3:7). In fact the Greek there is literally, “You must be born from above”. This involves a Divinely-appointed supernatural and total spiritual rebirth which results in an utterly transformed worldview.
No longer will you make yourself the sole judge of what is right or wrong, playing at God (which is what Satan seduced our first parents into, as we see in the first few verses of Genesis 3). But you will realise that you must follow God’s judgements on all matters. You will see absolutely everything in a wholly different manner to how you viewed everything before you were saved. You will feel like a square peg in a round hole and as if you do not really belong in this world (which you do not). In fact, “if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). Therefore, by corollary, the fact that you are not of the world and do not love the world proves that you have the love of the Father in you, thus proving that you are saved.
You will be utterly amazed at this all-encompassing contrast, for — despite the unpleasant feeling of alienation and unbelonging in this world — it confirms utterly that you have been saved.
So, the ninth sign of spiritual salvation is that your whole ‘worldview’ will be totally transformed, becoming completely different to both how it was before you believed and to that of the rest of the unbelieving world.
The tenth sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
10) The Presence of a Truly Humble Spirit in Your Soul
If you are genuinely saved, a humble spirit will be firmly implanted in your soul. “‘Truly I tell you,’ Jesus said, ‘unless you undergo a complete change of heart and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven’” (Matthew 18:3). This means not only evidencing humility but eschewing completely the typical traits of a worldly unbelieving adult, such as getting enmeshed in fleshly business, pride, envy, competitiveness, vying with others through base ambition, and so on.
“Therefore whoever will humble himself as this little child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens” (Matthew 18:4). The presence of a humble spirit within your soul is a great sign that you have been saved. Thus, David could say: “Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me” (Psalm 131:2). Check your soul carefully to see if it has this kind of humble spirit.
So the tenth sign of spiritual salvation is the presence of a truly humble spirit in Your soul.
The eleventh sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
11) The Willingness to Receive a Rebuke from the Wise
This is one of the most revealing of all the signs of salvation.
The proverb states that “a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear” is the equivalent of the gift of gold (Proverbs 25:12). If you are saved, you will be happy to receive a “rebuke” or a “correction” from the Scriptures for that is one of their functions (see 2 Timothy 3:16). Christ says to the churches, “As many as I might love, I rebuke and discipline” (Revelation 3:19). Such godly rebuke is not to be confused with mere human criticism. Genuine godly rebuke comes from a very different place and is designed for one’s spiritual growth rather than as a ‘put-down’. There are many who think they are rebuking but they are merely carping or ‘bitching’. A genuine loving rebuke comes from a heart of love and is specially designed as loving correction. It takes great wisdom to do this righteously.
In Proverbs 15:10 we read that “he who hates correction will die”. This is plainly talking about spiritual death because physical death befalls all people whether they hate correction or not. The inference of that is surely that those who love correction will live (i.e. they will not have to undergo spiritual death, the second death, separation from God forever). Therefore, to love correction is a sure sign that one has been saved.
So the eleventh sign of spiritual salvation is the willingness to receive a rebuke from the wise.
The twelfth sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
12) The Keeping of the Law of Christ and God’s Moral Law Commandments
If you are truly saved, you will willingly place yourself “under the law of Christ” (1 Corinthians 9:21). For “this is the love of God that we keep His commandments” (1 John 5:3). Keeping His moral law (though no longer the ceremonial law of the Old Testament) is proof of one’s salvation. As the Lord Jesus Himself put it:
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments… Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me… If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words”.
John 14:15,21,23-24
The logic of that concatenation of texts is glaringly obvious. A love for God will mean keeping His commandments. Only the saved can love God. Therefore keeping His commandments is a sure sign or salvation.
So the twelfth sign of spiritual salvation is the keeping of the law of Christ and the moral commandments of God’s law.
The thirteenth sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
13) The Willing Renunciation of Yourself by Saying ‘Goodbye’ to that self
If one is genuinely saved, then one will have no problem renouncing one’s ‘self’. “Then Jesus told His disciples, ‘If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me’” (Matthew 16:24). I have written on this subject at some length in a recent article. The title is “The Uniquely Christian Art of Saying ‘Goodbye’ to Oneself”. You will find the article by clicking on that title, which will take you to my website. Until you read that article (which I respectfully urge you to do), suffice it to say that the Bible text above shows that one cannot “come after” Christ (follow Him, be His disciple) unless one denies oneself. Thus the willing renunciation of oneself is a sure sign of salvation. (But please do read the article to see just how to “deny” yourself as there is very much more to that necessary process than meets the eye).
So the thirteenth sign of spiritual salvation is the willing renunciation of yourself by saying ‘goodbye’ to that self.
The fourteenth sign of spiritual salvation — that you are a genuine disciple of Christ — is…
14) You Will Have an Intense Longing for the Redemption of this Whole Creation
If you are genuinely saved you will have an intense longing for the redemption of this whole creation and for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. “We know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until the present time. Not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies” (Romans 8:22-23). We can see there that even the whole cosmic creation is “groaning”, as it were, awaiting the redemption. Paul treats the cosmos as if it is like a conscious living being which is yearning for the time when all will be transformed. The genuinely saved person not only looks forward to that time, which will involve the cosmic return of Christ, but loves the fact that the whole creation will be involved. Thus, the saved person is not selfishly fixated on his or her own salvation but sees that salvation as a part of a vast cosmic redemption process of recreation.
The saved disciple of Christ sees himself or herself as one of many parts involved in the process of transformation. As Paul said to Timothy, “From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who long for His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:8). Thus, all those who are genuinely saved long for Christ’s appearing. To have such a longing within you, and a consciousness of that as being part of the whole creation’s longing, is a sign of having been saved.
This longing will not make you into an escapist; for you still have to live in this world in order to grow to your full potential and to be a witness to truth. But your greatest desire is to see an end to the moral corruption of the world and for righteousness to be once more established in the universe. You know that this will come only through the return of the Lord Jesus Christ and you long for this recreation, the form of which is summed up in the first few verses of the penultimate chapter of the Bible:
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. ‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away’. And the One seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new’”.
Revelation 21:1-5
So, the fourteenth and final of our signs of spiritual salvation is that you will have an intense longing for the redemption of this whole creation and for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
CONCLUSION
All the above (and no doubt there are more), are the signs that you really have been saved. Do we see these evidences in ourselves? There is one further conglomerate sign of salvation — that you are Christ’s — and it is this: Possessing the qualities of faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness (a devout and prayerful heart), brotherly kindness, and love (2 Peter 1:5-7).
These qualities, says Peter, are important to verify your calling and election — to show you that you have been chosen in Christ for salvation (2 Peter 1:10), as are the fourteen signs which I have given above. Bear in mind that “many are called but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14), so it is all the more important to verify your “calling and election” to test if you are one of those “few”.
Thomas Brooks warns in his book, “Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices”, that the enemy of souls is always trying to destabilise Christians by putting them in a “sad, doubting, questioning and uncomfortable condition”. I have encountered so many people who are in that miserable condition precisely because they have not applied the litmus test of all these signs of salvation. However, it is the Lord’s desire to give us an unshakable assurance, “this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19). Jesus also says to His disciples: “In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2). In those words lies our hope for our long-term spiritual future.
“Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him; whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given about His Son. And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life”.
1 John 5:10-13
It is vital for us to know that we have eternal life, that we are saved, or we will wallow in a fog of secret despair, discontent and disenchantment, as do many who claim to be ‘Christians’. Not only do the above fourteen signs show it, but numerous other proofs have been given in Scripture which we can use as litmus tests regarding our own salvation. For “the Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children… And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:16 & 28). It doesn’t get any better than that.
